Summary
amcp is the official AnythingMCP command-line client. Call MCP tools from your shell and fully manage your instance — connectors, MCP servers, users, roles, SSO and settings — with a management-scoped API key. Install with npm, log in through the browser, script everything. Works for people and for connected AI agents.
Your whole MCP instance, from the terminal
Meet amcp, the official AnythingMCP command-line client. It does two things:
- Call MCP tools from your shell — discover them, read their schema, run them.
- Drive the management API (
/api/*) with a management-scoped API key — so a person, or a connected AI agent, can configure the entire instance (connectors, MCP servers, users, roles, SSO, memory, skills, the knowledge graph and settings) without leaving the terminal.
It is open source (AGPL-3.0), works against AnythingMCP Cloud and self-hosted instances, and installs from npm:
npm i -g @anythingmcp/cli
amcp --help
Log in
Mint a management API key in the dashboard (Settings → Management API keys, read-only or admin), or let the CLI do it through your browser:
amcp login --browser --url https://cloud.anythingmcp.com # read-only
amcp login --browser --scope admin --url https://cloud.anythingmcp.com
--browser opens the instance's authorization page, you approve it under your existing dashboard session (SSO included), and the key comes back to the CLI over a one-shot 127.0.0.1 loopback — it never appears in a URL, log or shell history. To connect to one MCP server for tool calls instead, use amcp login --url … --server … with an MCP key.
Call MCP tools
amcp tools ls # list tools, with read-only/destructive hints
amcp tools describe YOUR_TOOL # full description + input JSON schema
amcp tools call YOUR_TOOL --args '{"id":"123"}'
Manage the instance
Everything the dashboard can do, amcp api can do with a management key — it is gh api for AnythingMCP:
amcp api GET /api/connectors
amcp api GET /api/mcp-servers
amcp api POST /api/mcp-servers --data '{"name":"ops","description":"Ops server"}'
amcp api PUT /api/mcp-servers/SERVER_ID --data '{"codeMode":"tools"}'
Not sure what's available? The CLI ships a catalogue of every management operation — no key, no network:
amcp api --list # every operation, grouped by resource
amcp api --list mcp-servers # just one resource
A management key carries the owner's identity and role: it never grants privilege, so admin-only routes still need an admin owner, and read-only keys can only read. The API applies a per-key rate limit, so a runaway agent is refused rather than hammering your instance.
Built for agents, too
The same management API is exactly what a connected AI agent needs to onboard and run a workspace end to end — add a connector, create an MCP server, assign roles, wire SSO, toggle memory and skills — safely, within the scope you grant it. Agents default to read-only.
Scripting and CI
AMCP_URL=https://cloud.anythingmcp.com AMCP_API_KEY=mcp_… amcp api GET /api/users --json
amcp completion zsh > "${fpath[1]}/_amcp" # shell completion for bash, zsh, fish
Keys are stored with mode 0600, HTTPS is required (except loopback for local dev), redirects are refused so a key can't follow a request to another origin, and the key is never accepted as a command argument.
