CoinMarketCap + Microsoft Copilot

Crypto market data from the CoinMarketCap Pro API: coin and exchange ids and metadata, latest and historical prices, rankings and categories, global market totals, the Fear and Greed, Altcoin Season and CMC100 indexes, exchange proof-of-reserves and price conversion. Read-only; the free Basic plan covers most tools.

Prerequisites

See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:

CMC_PRO_API_KEY

Step 1 — Get credentials

Setting up takes about 2 minutes. You need a CoinMarketCap API key; the free Basic plan is enough for most tools.

  1. Sign up at https://pro.coinmarketcap.com/signup. The Basic plan gives 10,000 credits a month and 30 requests a minute.
  2. Copy the API key from the dashboard at https://pro.coinmarketcap.com/account into CMC_PRO_API_KEY. It is sent in the X-CMC_PRO_API_KEY header.
  3. Install the connector and run coinmarketcap_get_key_info: it shows your plan, the rate limit and the credits left today and this month, and costs no credit.

Coin ids first: tickers are not unique, several coins share the same symbol. The AI resolves a name or ticker to its numeric CoinMarketCap id with coinmarketcap_map_cryptocurrencies (pass symbol) and uses that id in every other call. Well-known ids: 1 = Bitcoin, 1027 = Ethereum, 825 = Tether, 5426 = Solana. Fiat ids for convert_id come from coinmarketcap_map_fiat (2781 = USD), which can also list gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

What it reads:

  • Prices now: coinmarketcap_get_simple_price for the quickest answer, coinmarketcap_get_quotes_latest for the full quote with market cap, dominance, 24 hour volume, changes from 1 hour to 90 days, supply and rank.
  • Rankings and screens: coinmarketcap_list_listings_latest sorts and filters by price, market cap, volume, supply or 24 hour change, coins or tokens, or a tag. coinmarketcap_list_gainers_losers shows the biggest movers over 1h, 24h, 7d or 30d.
  • History: coinmarketcap_get_quotes_historical for prices at regular intervals, coinmarketcap_get_ohlcv_historical for daily or hourly candles, coinmarketcap_get_global_metrics_historical for the whole market over time.
  • Coin profiles: coinmarketcap_get_cryptocurrency_info with description, website, whitepaper, explorers, social links, tags, launch date and contract addresses, also looked up by contract address. Categories (DeFi, Layer 1, Memes, AI and more) with coinmarketcap_list_categories, the coins of one category with coinmarketcap_get_category.
  • Market mood: coinmarketcap_get_global_metrics (total market cap and volume, Bitcoin and Ethereum dominance, DeFi, stablecoin and derivatives figures), coinmarketcap_get_fear_and_greed_latest and coinmarketcap_get_fear_and_greed_historical (0 = extreme fear, 100 = extreme greed), coinmarketcap_get_altcoin_season_index (above 75 altcoin season, below 25 Bitcoin season) and coinmarketcap_get_cmc100_index with constituents and weights.
  • Exchanges: coinmarketcap_map_exchanges finds the id (270 = Binance), coinmarketcap_get_exchange_info gives the profile, countries, fiat currencies and maker and taker fees, coinmarketcap_get_exchange_assets lists its proof-of-reserves wallets with blockchain, token, balance and USD value.
  • Conversion: coinmarketcap_convert_price converts an amount of a crypto or fiat currency into one or more others.

Read-only: every tool only reads, so no tool is switched off at install.

Data formats: every answer has a status object (error_code, error_message, credit_count) and the result in data. In the latest listings and quotes, data is a list and each coin's quote is a list with one entry per requested currency; elsewhere quote is an object keyed by currency (quote.USD.price). Prices and market caps are in the requested currency, USD by default. Percent changes are percentages (2.5 = +2.5%), supplies are in coin units, times are ISO 8601 in UTC.

Paging: list tools take start (1-based) and limit; the next page starts at start plus limit.

Credits and plans: every call costs at least one credit. Listings cost one credit per 250 coins, historical calls one per 100 data points, and each convert currency beyond the first one more; the historical Fear and Greed list costs one credit per call (up to 500 days). Credits reset daily and monthly, on the Basic plan at midnight UTC. coinmarketcap_get_ohlcv_historical, coinmarketcap_list_gainers_losers and conversion at a past time need the Startup plan or higher. On Basic, historical quotes reach 1 month back for intraday intervals and 1 year for daily ones.

Common errors: 401 means a missing or wrong key (error codes 1001, 1002), 402 an unpaid or expired plan, 403 an endpoint your plan does not include (1006), 429 the per-minute rate limit or the daily or monthly credits (1008 to 1011), 400 an invalid parameter such as an unknown symbol; with skip_invalid set to true the AI skips unknown ids or symbols instead of failing the whole request.

The connector does not trade, does not read exchange accounts or wallets you own and does not set price alerts. It shows market data from CoinMarketCap, not financial advice.

Step 2 — Install the adapter

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d

Step 3 — Add the connector in Microsoft Copilot

Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide shows YOUR_SERVER_ID.

Microsoft Copilot uses MCP servers through agents built in Copilot Studio: you add AnythingMCP to an agent as a tool, then publish the agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud over Streamable HTTP, which AnythingMCP supports.

  1. In Copilot Studio, open your agent (or create one), go to Tools and choose Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol.
  2. Enter a Server name (for example AnythingMCP), a Server description that says what the connector does, and the Server URL https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID. Copilot Studio uses the description to decide when to call the server.
  3. Under authentication, choose API key, set Type to Header and the header name to X-API-Key, then select Create.
  4. In Add tool, choose Create a new connection, paste an MCP API key from AnythingMCP (MCP Servers → your server → API keys) and select Add to agent.
  5. Try it in the agent's Test pane: ask for something that needs the CoinMarketCap tools.
  6. Select Publish, then Channels → Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, keep Make agent available in Microsoft Copilot selected and choose Add channel. See agent in Teams installs it for you; in Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @ and pick the agent.

Prefer per-user sign-in? Choose OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery instead of an API key: each user then signs in to AnythingMCP the first time the agent calls it.

Self-hosting? Use your instance's public HTTPS address instead of https://cloud.anythingmcp.com. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud, so localhost does not work.

FAQ

Which Copilot is this for? Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, through agents built in Copilot Studio. The Microsoft Copilot app for personal accounts has no option to add your own MCP server.

What do I need? A work account with access to Copilot Studio (a license or a trial) to build the agent. People who use it in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams need access to the agent: share it with them, or ask an admin to publish it to the organization. If your organization applies data policies to Power Platform connectors, they cover MCP servers too.

The agent doesn't call the tools. Check that the header name is exactly X-API-Key and that the key belongs to the same MCP server as the URL, and make the server description specific: Copilot Studio uses it to decide when to call the server. Publish the agent again after each change; in an open chat, type "start over" to get the new version.
