Finnhub + Cursor
Give your AI live market data from Finnhub: stock, forex and crypto quotes, company profiles and key financials, company and market news, analyst recommendations, earnings and IPO calendars, insider transactions, SEC filings and market status. Works on Finnhub's free plan; read-only.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
FINNHUB_API_KEY
Step 1 — Get credentials
Setting up takes about 1 minute. You need a Finnhub API key; the free plan covers every tool except price history candles.
- Sign up at finnhub.io/register. It is free.
- Open the Dashboard at finnhub.io/dashboard and copy the API key shown there.
- Paste the key alone into
FINNHUB_API_KEY, withouttoken=or spaces. The connector sends it in theX-Finnhub-Tokenheader, never in the URL. - Install the connector and run
finnhub_get_market_statuswith exchangeUS: it tells you whether the US market is open right now and which session it is in.
What it reads: quotes for stocks, ETFs, forex and crypto; company profiles with market capitalisation and shares outstanding; key figures such as the 52-week high and low, beta, P/E, P/B, EPS, margins, ROE and dividend yield; company news and market news (general, forex, crypto, merger); peers; monthly analyst recommendations; earnings surprises and the earnings calendar; the IPO calendar; insider transactions and insider sentiment; financial statements as reported to the SEC and the list of SEC filings; market status and holidays; and the symbol lists of forex providers and crypto exchanges.
Symbols first: the AI resolves the ticker with finnhub_search_symbols, by company name, symbol, ISIN or CUSIP. US tickers are plain, such as AAPL; other exchanges have a suffix, such as SAP.DE or VOD.L. Forex and crypto quotes use the exchange symbol, such as OANDA:EUR_USD or BINANCE:BTCUSDT, which the AI looks up with finnhub_list_forex_symbols or finnhub_list_crypto_symbols.
Reading the numbers: quote fields are short: c current, d change, dp percent change, h high, l low, o open, pc previous close, t time in Unix seconds. Market capitalisation and shares outstanding are in millions. Dates are YYYY-MM-DD. Reported financials are large answers, so the AI narrows finnhub_get_financials_reported with a from and to date.
Free plan: every tool works except finnhub_get_stock_candles (price history), which needs a paid plan and answers 403 on free keys; there the AI uses finnhub_get_quote and the 52-week figures of finnhub_get_basic_financials instead. Some data is shorter on free keys: company news goes one year back, earnings surprises cover the last 4 quarters, and the earnings calendar one month back plus upcoming dates. Real-time quotes cover US stocks; other markets need a paid plan.
Read-only: every tool only reads. The connector places no orders and moves no money, so there is nothing to confirm and no tool is switched off at install.
Limits: the free plan allows 60 calls a minute and 30 a second. After a 429 the AI waits a minute, and it prefers one targeted call over many broad ones.
Common errors: 401 means Finnhub refused the key: copy it again from the dashboard. 403 "You don't have access to this resource" means the key works, but that data is not on your plan. 429 means the per-minute limit was reached.
Not investment advice: market data is information. When you ask what to buy or sell, the AI shows you the numbers and tells you it is not investment advice.
The connector does not trade, place orders, connect to a brokerage account or read your portfolio.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in Cursor
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
Cursor reads MCP servers from ~/.cursor/mcp.json. Add this entry:
{
"mcpServers": {
"anythingmcp": {
"url": "https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID",
"headers": { "X-API-Key": "YOUR_MCP_API_KEY" }
}
}
}
- Create an MCP API key in AnythingMCP under MCP Servers → your server → API keys, and paste it in place of
YOUR_MCP_API_KEY. - Save the file and restart Cursor.
- Open Cursor → Settings → MCP and check that
anythingmcpis listed and connected. - Start chatting: the agent can now call the
Finnhubtools.
