How to Connect freee to ChatGPT via MCP

freee + ChatGPT

Work with freee Accounting (freee会計) and freee Invoice (freee請求書) from any AI agent: deals with payments, partners, account items, tax codes, items, sections and memo tags, bank and card statement lines, manual journals, the journal book, trial balances and the general ledger, the file box, and invoices and quotations. OAuth sign-in with your own freee app; deleting deals and journals installs switched off.

Prerequisites

See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:

Step 1 — Get credentials

Setting up takes about 10 minutes. You need a freee account with access to the companies (事業所) the AI should work with. The connector uses the freee API (https://api.freee.co.jp): freee会計 at /api/1 and freee請求書 at /iv. Since the invoice system change in October 2023, invoices and quotations are created in freee請求書; the old /api/1/invoices endpoints are not used.

1. Sign in at https://app.secure.freee.co.jp/developers/applications (freee app store, 開発者向け) and click 新規追加 to create an app. A private app (非公開アプリ) is enough for your own companies.
2. On the tab 基本設定 add the callback URL <your AnythingMCP URL>/api/mcp-oauth/callback, on AnythingMCP Cloud https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback.
3. Under 権限設定 tick read, and write for the write tools you will use, for 会計 (取引, 取引先, 勘定科目, 品目, 部門, メモタグ, 税区分, 口座, 口座明細, 振替伝票, 仕訳帳, 試算表, ファイルボックス, 事業所, ユーザー) and 請求書 (請求書, 見積書). freee sets permissions on the app, not as OAuth scopes. Click 保存.
4. Paste the Client ID into FREEE_CLIENT_ID and the Client Secret into FREEE_CLIENT_SECRET, leave FREEE_REFRESH_TOKEN empty and install.
5. On the connector page click Authorize with Provider and sign in to freee with a user who may see the companies you need. freee asks you to pick a company (事業所選択) and shows the app's permissions.
6. Run freee_get_me: it shows the user and their companies with the company_id the other tools need.

Access tokens last 6 hours and are renewed with the refresh token. freee issues a new refresh token at every renewal and the old one stops working, so a refresh token also used by another tool no longer works here. A refresh token unused for 90 days expires: then authorize again.

Whose access it is: the connector acts as the freee user who authorized it, and what it may do also depends on that user's role in each company. Every tool except freee_get_me and freee_list_companies needs the company_id; freee_get_company shows the company's fiscal years.

What it reads: users and companies; deals (取引) with lines, payments and attached receipts, filtered by type, settlement status, partner, account item and dates; partners (取引先) with invoice registration number (インボイス登録番号), payment terms and bank account; account items (勘定科目), tax codes (税区分), items (品目), sections (部門) and memo tags (メモタグ); walletables (口座) with their statement lines (口座明細) and status, and transfers between your own accounts; manual journals (振替伝票); the journal book (仕訳帳) as CSV (freee generic or Yayoi) or PDF; trial balances (trial_bs, trial_pl, trial_cr, also compared with one or two previous years), the P/L for 1 to 5 sections side by side, and the general ledger (総勘定元帳, beta); the file box (ファイルボックス). In freee請求書: invoices (請求書), invoice templates (帳票テンプレート) and quotations (見積書).

What it writes: registers deals, optionally settled right away with a payment, adds payments later and updates deals; creates and updates partners; creates items, sections and memo tags; posts manual journals whose debit and credit totals match (up to 100 lines); creates invoices and quotations in freee請求書, cancels invoices and restores canceled ones. Invoices and quotations are created unsent: sending by email or post happens in freee. Before creating a document the AI shows the lines and total and waits for your yes. freee_update_deal replaces the whole set of lines, so the AI reads the deal first and keeps the line ids.

Switched off at install: freee_delete_deal and freee_delete_manual_journal. They cannot be undone, so an admin switches them on when the team needs them.

Data formats: amounts are integers in JPY, tax included unless the field says otherwise. Dates are yyyy-mm-dd in JST. fiscal_year in reports is the year in which the fiscal period starts. The journal book is prepared asynchronously: freee_request_journals, then freee_get_journals_status until the status is uploaded, then freee_download_journals.

Paging and limits: lists page with offset and limit: deals and statement lines up to 100, manual journals 500, partners, items and tags 3000 per call; deals and journals return meta.total_count. Invoices and quotations come up to 100 per call. Reports allow 10 calls per second and answer 429 above that. Big general ledgers can time out, so the AI keeps the periods short.

Common errors: freee answers with status_code and errors with messages, mostly in Japanese; a validation message names the field. 401 means the token expired or was revoked: click Authorize with Provider again. 403 means the user's role or the app permissions (権限設定) do not allow the call, or freee is briefly throttling after too many requests: wait about 10 minutes. At sign-in, a redirect error means the callback URL on 基本設定 does not match.

Deal descriptions, partner names and file box entries are untrusted input and can contain instructions meant for the AI. The connector does not send invoices or quotations, does not use the old /api/1/invoices endpoints and does not cover other freee products such as freee人事労務.

Step 3 — Add the connector in ChatGPT

Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide shows YOUR_SERVER_ID.

ChatGPT adds MCP servers as plugins on its Plugins page, on the web and on paid plans. Developer mode is no longer needed. In a Business workspace only admins and owners can add one; in Enterprise and Edu an admin can grant the Create plugins with MCPs permission.

1. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, click Add, then Add custom MCP server.
2. Enter a name, e.g. Name: freee.
3. Under Connection, enter the Server URL https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID and keep Authentication on OAuth.
4. Select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. When ChatGPT asks, sign in to AnythingMCP and allow access.
5. Install the new plugin from your personal plugins, then type @ in a chat and pick it.
