Google Contacts + Claude
Let your AI work with Google Contacts: search and read contacts with emails, phones, companies and addresses, create and update contacts, organise labels, and find people you emailed but never saved. Personal Google accounts and Google Workspace.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
GOOGLE_CLIENT_ID, GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET
Step 1 — Get credentials
- Open console.cloud.google.com, pick or create a project, then go to APIs & Services → Library and enable the Google People API.
- Open APIs & Services → OAuth consent screen. Choose Internal if you are on Google Workspace (the simplest option), otherwise External. For External, set the publishing status to In production: while the app is in Testing, Google revokes its refresh tokens after 7 days and the connector stops working every week. For your own account you can click through the "unverified app" warning.
- Open APIs & Services → Credentials → Create credentials → OAuth client ID, choose the application type Web application and add the authorized redirect URI
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback. If you host AnythingMCP yourself, enterhttps://your-anythingmcp-host/api/mcp-oauth/callbackinstead. - Paste the client ID into
GOOGLE_CLIENT_IDand the client secret intoGOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET, then install the connector. - On the connector page, click Authorize with Provider and sign in with the Google account whose contacts the AI should use. The refresh token is stored encrypted and access tokens are renewed automatically.
One Google client for all Google connectors: the same Cloud project and OAuth client can serve every Google connector: Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Forms, Google Contacts, Google Meet, Google Tasks, Search Console, Analytics and Ads. Enable each API in that project, reuse the same client ID and secret, and authorize each connector once. Each one asks only for its own permissions.
What it covers: your saved Google Contacts with their labels, and the "Other contacts" Google keeps for people you emailed but never saved. The connector works as the Google account that authorized it. The Google Workspace company directory is not included.
Search warm-up: Google's contact search runs on a cache. The AI refreshes it once at the start of a session with google_contacts_warm_up_search, waits a few seconds and then searches. Search matches the beginning of names, email addresses, phone numbers and companies, for example ana or acme. If a contact created a few minutes ago is still missing, the AI warms up again or lists the most recently changed contacts.
Adding and updating contacts: Google does not stop duplicates, so the AI searches before it creates a contact. An update replaces each field it names as a whole: to add a second phone number, the AI sends the existing numbers plus the new one. Changes are sent one after the other and can take a few minutes to show up in lists and search.
Labels and other contacts: the AI can create labels and add contacts to them or remove them; removing a contact from a label keeps the contact. An "Other contact" can be saved into your contacts with its name, email addresses and phone numbers.
Permissions: the connector asks for https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts (read and edit your contacts and labels) and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts.other.readonly (read "Other contacts"). Both are sensitive scopes: outside your own Workspace organisation, Google shows the "unverified app" warning until the app is verified. For your own account you can click through it.
Read-only setup: change the scopes in the connector's OAuth settings to https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts.readonly https://www.googleapis.com/auth/contacts.other.readonly, authorize again and disable google_contacts_create_contact, google_contacts_update_contact, google_contacts_create_contact_group, google_contacts_modify_group_members and google_contacts_save_other_contact. To leave out "Other contacts", drop the second scope and disable google_contacts_list_other_contacts, google_contacts_search_other_contacts and google_contacts_save_other_contact.
Switched off at install: google_contacts_delete_contact. The API cannot restore a deleted contact, so turn it on only if the AI should delete contacts.
Changes wait for your yes: before every change the AI shows you the contact and the change, and waits for your confirmation. Contacts sync to your phone and to Gmail at once.
Common errors: 401 means the authorization expired or was revoked (always after 7 days while the consent screen is in Testing): click Authorize with Provider again. 403 PERMISSION_DENIED means the scope does not allow the call, for example in a read-only setup or without the "Other contacts" scope; 403 "People API has not been used in project" means the Google People API is not enabled in the Cloud project. 404 means the contact id is wrong or the contact was deleted. 400 failedPrecondition on an update means the contact changed in the meantime: the AI reads it again and retries.
The connector does not read the Google Workspace directory, does not upload contact photos and does not merge duplicates.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in Claude
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
Recommended path: works on claude.ai web without editing any config file.
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors.
- Click +, then Add custom connector.
- Enter a name, e.g.
Google Contacts, and the remote MCP server URLhttps://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID, then click Add. - Click Connect and sign in to AnythingMCP (OAuth) to allow access.
