Step 1 — Get credentials
Sensitive data: read this first. This connector reads a tax advisory firm's DATEV data through Klardaten: master data, tax returns, bookkeeping and payroll of the firm's clients, including salaries, tax numbers, birth dates and bank transactions of private persons and companies. That data is covered by professional secrecy (§ 203 StGB, § 57 StBerG) and the GDPR. Add the connector only to servers whose users may see all of it, for example the partners or the staff who already have that access in DATEV, and never to a shared or company-wide server. The API key acts with the DATEV profile behind it, so the model sees whatever that profile can read.
- Klardaten's own connector must be installed and running on the firm's DATEV server, with a DATEV instance in the Klardaten dashboard.
- Sign in at https://dashboard.klardaten.com and create an API key for your user. It starts with
uk-; put it inKLARDATEN_API_KEY(sent asAuthorization: Bearer). - Copy the id of the DATEV instance (a UUID) into
KLARDATEN_INSTANCE_ID. Every DATEV request carries it in thex-client-instance-idheader;klardaten_list_instanceslists the instances the key can reach. - Call
klardaten_get_mefirst to check access, thenklardaten_list_clients(master data),klardaten_list_accounting_clients(bookkeeping),klardaten_list_payroll_clients(LODAS payroll) orklardaten_list_firm_clients(practice management analytics).
Ids differ per area: master data uses UUIDs, accounting a numeric client_id with fiscal years keyed as YYYYMMDD, payroll and firm analytics the client_number. Always filter klardaten_list_postings by client_id and fiscal_year; across all clients of a firm the query can time out. The accounting, payroll, tax and analytics endpoints depend on your Klardaten plan and answer 403 outside it. klardaten_search_documents needs Klardaten's document search add-on and is installed switched off. If DATEV calls fail while klardaten_get_me works, check klardaten_get_datevconnect_health.

ChatGPT connects to MCP servers as custom apps in developer mode, available on paid plans (not on Free). On Business and Enterprise workspaces an admin may have to allow it first.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and click +.
- Enter a name and a short description, e.g. Name:
