Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
MASTODON_INSTANCE_URL, MASTODON_ACCESS_TOKEN
Step 1 — Get credentials
This connector wraps the Mastodon REST API (any instance — set baseUrl to your instance).
Setup:
- Pick your instance (e.g.
https://mastodon.social,https://fosstodon.org, your self-hosted one). - Log in → Preferences → Development → New application.
- Name it (e.g. 'mcp'). Scopes:
read, write, follow, push— tick whatever your use case needs (don't over-grant). - Save → copy the Your access token value (shown only once). This is a personal access token tied to your account.
- Set
MASTODON_INSTANCE_URL(e.g.https://mastodon.social) andMASTODON_ACCESS_TOKEN.
Authentication: Authorization: Bearer ${MASTODON_ACCESS_TOKEN} on every request.
…(continued in the in-app connector instructions)
Step 2 — Install the adapter
git clone https://github.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp.git
cd anythingmcp && docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in ChatGPT
ChatGPT supports MCP servers via the Connectors feature (Plus / Pro / Team / Enterprise plans). The free tier does not support custom connectors.
- Open ChatGPT → Settings → Connectors (or click the 🔧 icon in the composer → Manage connectors).
- Click "Add custom connector".
- Fill in:
- Name:
Mastodon - MCP server URL:
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp - Authentication: Bearer token → paste your MCP API key (from AnythingMCP → Profile → MCP API Keys → New Key)
- Name:
- Click Connect to authorize.
