OCR.space + Microsoft Copilot
OCR.space OCR API: read the text of images and PDFs (receipts, invoices, scans, screenshots, photos of documents) from a public URL, with automatic language detection, table mode for receipts and a searchable-PDF export. Free API key.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
OCR_SPACE_API_KEY
Step 1 — Get credentials
Setting up takes about 1 minute. You need an OCR.space API key: a free key, which arrives by e-mail, or the key of a PRO plan.
- Request a free API key at ocr.space/ocrapi/freekey. OCR.space sends it to you by e-mail.
- Paste only the key into
OCR_SPACE_API_KEY, without spaces or quotes. The connector sends it in theapikeyheader. - Install the connector. The install check reads a small sample image, which counts as one request.
- Run
ocr_space_read_urlon a small public image, for example a screenshot or a photo of a receipt: it returns the text of every page.
What it reads: the text of images (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIF, BMP, WEBP) and PDFs at a public URL: receipts, invoices, delivery notes, scanned letters, screenshots and photos of documents. ocr_space_read_url returns one text per page, with line breaks, plus exit codes. ocr_space_make_searchable_pdf turns a scan into a searchable PDF (an invisible text layer over the original) and returns its download link together with the recognised text.
The file must be public: OCR.space downloads the file itself, so the URL must open from the internet without a login. A link to a private drive or to an e-mail attachment fails with E217 (could not download). When the URL has no file extension, the AI tells OCR.space the file type.
Engines and languages: engine 2 (the default) is fast, detects the language itself and handles numbers and special characters well. Engine 3 is the most accurate, with 200+ languages, handwriting and complex layouts, but it is slower. Language auto works with both; when it picks the wrong language, the AI sets a code such as ger, fre, ita, spa, chs or jpn.
Receipts, small and rotated images: table mode keeps receipts and tables line by line in reading order. Upscaling helps with small or blurry images, scans and screenshots. Orientation detection turns rotated photos the right way round before reading them.
Searchable PDFs: the download link (SearchablePDFURL) expires after about an hour, so save the file soon. On the free plan the PDF carries a watermark. The text layer can be shown highlighted or kept invisible in PDF viewers.
Read-only: both tools only read, although they are POST requests. Nothing changes in your OCR.space account, so there is nothing to confirm and no tool is switched off at install.
Limits: on the free plan a file can be up to 1 MB and a PDF up to 3 pages, with 25,000 requests a month and 500 a day per IP address. Engine 3 is limited to 1,000 pages a month on the free plan. PRO keys allow 5 MB per file and more pages.
Reading the answer: OCRExitCode 1 means all pages were read, 2 some, 3 or 4 none, and ErrorMessage says why. OCR.space reports processing errors with HTTP 200; the connector turns them into a failed call carrying OCR.space's message.
Common errors: 403 E555 means the API key is wrong. 400 E400 means no file was given, E204 a wrong parameter. E217 is a URL that cannot be downloaded. 429 or E500 means the monthly or daily limit is reached: try again later or use a PRO key.
The connector does not upload files from your computer and cannot read private drive links or e-mail attachments: it only works with a public URL.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in Microsoft Copilot
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
Microsoft Copilot uses MCP servers through agents built in Copilot Studio: you add AnythingMCP to an agent as a tool, then publish the agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud over Streamable HTTP, which AnythingMCP supports.
- In Copilot Studio, open your agent (or create one), go to Tools and choose Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol.
- Enter a Server name (for example
AnythingMCP), a Server description that says what the connector does, and the Server URLhttps://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID. Copilot Studio uses the description to decide when to call the server. - Under authentication, choose API key, set Type to Header and the header name to
X-API-Key, then select Create. - In Add tool, choose Create a new connection, paste an MCP API key from AnythingMCP (MCP Servers → your server → API keys) and select Add to agent.
- Try it in the agent's Test pane: ask for something that needs the
OCR.spacetools. - Select Publish, then Channels → Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, keep Make agent available in Microsoft Copilot selected and choose Add channel. See agent in Teams installs it for you; in Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @ and pick the agent.
Prefer per-user sign-in? Choose OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery instead of an API key: each user then signs in to AnythingMCP the first time the agent calls it.
Self-hosting? Use your instance's public HTTPS address instead of https://cloud.anythingmcp.com. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud, so localhost does not work.

FAQ
Which Copilot is this for? Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, through agents built in Copilot Studio. The Microsoft Copilot app for personal accounts has no option to add your own MCP server.
What do I need? A work account with access to Copilot Studio (a license or a trial) to build the agent. People who use it in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams need access to the agent: share it with them, or ask an admin to publish it to the organization. If your organization applies data policies to Power Platform connectors, they cover MCP servers too.
The agent doesn't call the tools. Check that the header name is exactly X-API-Key and that the key belongs to the same MCP server as the URL, and make the server description specific: Copilot Studio uses it to decide when to call the server. Publish the agent again after each change; in an open chat, type "start over" to get the new version.
