Openapi.com Company + Microsoft Copilot

Italian and international company data from Openapi.com by VAT number or tax code: company profile at three levels, PEC, SDI code, address, shareholders, stakeholders, beneficial owners, cessation and VAT-group checks, public administrations, split payment, company search, EU VIES checks and worldwide lookups. Read-only; every call is billed per request by Openapi.com.

Prerequisites

See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:

OPENAPI_COMPANY_TOKEN

Step 1 — Get credentials

Setup takes a few minutes. You need an Openapi.com account on console.openapi.com with credit in its wallet or a Company API subscription, and a token with the Company scopes.

  1. Sign in at console.openapi.com and top up credit or subscribe to the Company API.
  2. Create a token with the Company scopes you need, in the console's Tokens section or with the OAuth API. A scope names the endpoint, e.g. GET:company.openapi.com/IT-advanced for openapi_company_it_advanced. One token can carry several scopes and is valid for up to a year.
  3. Copy the token into OPENAPI_COMPANY_TOKEN: only the token, without Bearer. The connector sends it as Authorization: Bearer ....
  4. Install the connector. To check the connection, look up a VAT number you know with openapi_company_it_start; that call is billed like any other.

Every call is billed: Openapi.com charges each request to your account, from wallet credit or your subscription, at the price per endpoint shown on console.openapi.com. No tool is free. openapi_company_it_full is the most expensive call of the API; openapi_company_it_search is priced by the number of results and the data enrichment you ask for. The AI picks the cheapest tool that answers (openapi_company_it_start or openapi_company_it_name before openapi_company_it_advanced, openapi_company_it_advanced before openapi_company_it_full), does not repeat a lookup it already has, and runs a search with dryRun 1 first: that returns the number of matches and the price, which the AI tells you before the real search.

Scopes decide what works: a call to an endpoint the token has no scope for answers 403. In that case create a token with the GET:company.openapi.com scopes you need.

Production, or the sandbox to try it out: the connector calls production at https://company.openapi.com. Openapi.com also runs a sandbox at https://test.company.openapi.com with its own sandbox tokens and a fixed list of test companies. To try it, change the connector's base URL to the sandbox address and use a sandbox token. A sandbox token on production answers 401.

Cloud and self-hosted work the same way: the token is the only credential, and the connector calls the same Openapi.com address from both.

Which countries: Italy in depth, from the chamber of commerce, the Revenue Agency and the IPA index of public administrations. For other EU countries, openapi_company_eu_vies_check checks a VAT number in VIES and openapi_company_eu_start returns basic data for the prefixes AT, BE, BG, CY, CZ, DE, DK, EE, EL, ES, FI, FR, GB, HR, HU, IE, IT, LT, LU, LV, MT, NL, PL, PT, RO, SE, SI and SK. openapi_company_ww_start and openapi_company_ww_advanced cover companies in any country, with advanced data where that country's sources provide it. The country-specific FR, DE, ES, PT, GB, BE, AT, CH and PL endpoints of Openapi.com are not included: the worldwide tools stand in for them.

Identifiers: an Italian VAT number (partita IVA) has 11 digits (12485671007), a company's tax code (codice fiscale) is usually the same 11 digits, a sole trader's tax code has 16 characters. Answers also carry an Openapi id that most Italian tools accept instead. openapi_company_eu_vies_check takes the country code separately (EL for Greece), openapi_company_eu_start takes it as a prefix (DE123456789), and the worldwide tools take an ISO two-letter country code with a VAT number, tax code, company number or Openapi id.

Company search: openapi_company_it_search filters by name (at least 3 characters, * as wildcard), province, town, ATECO code, legal form (codes from openapi_company_it_legal_forms), chamber of commerce status, turnover, employees, shareholder, PEC, SDI code or a radius around a point. Without dataEnrichment it returns only ids; with it, company data billed per result. At most 1000 results per call; page with skip and limit.

Slow sources: when the registries are slow, a heavy call such as openapi_company_it_full or openapi_company_it_stakeholders answers after 30 seconds with a request id and the state PENDING. The AI then calls openapi_company_check_request with that id a little later instead of paying for the lookup again.

Not included: the asynchronous POST variants with callbacks, the AML and marketing packages and change monitoring (/monitor).

Common errors: a failed call carries success: false, an error code and a message. 401 means the token is missing, wrong or expired, or is a sandbox token used on production. 402 means the account has no credit left for that call: top up on console.openapi.com. 403 means the token lacks the scope for that endpoint. 404 means no company was found, 406 a malformed VAT number or tax code. 429 means too many requests, or that the national VIES registry is busy: wait a moment and try again.

What it reads: for Italian companies, name, VAT number, tax code, address and activity status; ATECO code, legal form, REA number, share capital, turnover and employees from the latest balance sheets, and registration and cessation dates; the complete file with managers and over 400 balance-sheet figures; the PEC with its history and the SDI code for e-invoices; shareholders above 10 percent, stakeholders, the companies it holds stakes in, and beneficial owners; whether a VAT number has ceased, whether a company belongs to a VAT group and whether it is on the split-payment lists; public administrations with their IPA offices and SDI codes; the legal-form codes. For other countries: VIES validity with name and address, and basic or advanced company data worldwide.

Read-only: every tool only reads. Nothing is written to Openapi.com or to any registry, so no tool is switched off at install; every call is still billed.

Step 2 — Install the adapter

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d

Step 3 — Add the connector in Microsoft Copilot

Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide shows YOUR_SERVER_ID.

Microsoft Copilot uses MCP servers through agents built in Copilot Studio: you add AnythingMCP to an agent as a tool, then publish the agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud over Streamable HTTP, which AnythingMCP supports.

  1. In Copilot Studio, open your agent (or create one), go to Tools and choose Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol.
  2. Enter a Server name (for example AnythingMCP), a Server description that says what the connector does, and the Server URL https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID. Copilot Studio uses the description to decide when to call the server.
  3. Under authentication, choose API key, set Type to Header and the header name to X-API-Key, then select Create.
  4. In Add tool, choose Create a new connection, paste an MCP API key from AnythingMCP (MCP Servers → your server → API keys) and select Add to agent.
  5. Try it in the agent's Test pane: ask for something that needs the Openapi.com Company tools.
  6. Select Publish, then Channels → Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, keep Make agent available in Microsoft Copilot selected and choose Add channel. See agent in Teams installs it for you; in Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @ and pick the agent.

Prefer per-user sign-in? Choose OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery instead of an API key: each user then signs in to AnythingMCP the first time the agent calls it.

Self-hosting? Use your instance's public HTTPS address instead of https://cloud.anythingmcp.com. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud, so localhost does not work.

FAQ

Which Copilot is this for? Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, through agents built in Copilot Studio. The Microsoft Copilot app for personal accounts has no option to add your own MCP server.

What do I need? A work account with access to Copilot Studio (a license or a trial) to build the agent. People who use it in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams need access to the agent: share it with them, or ask an admin to publish it to the organization. If your organization applies data policies to Power Platform connectors, they cover MCP servers too.

The agent doesn't call the tools. Check that the header name is exactly X-API-Key and that the key belongs to the same MCP server as the URL, and make the server description specific: Copilot Studio uses it to decide when to call the server. Publish the agent again after each change; in an open chat, type "start over" to get the new version.
