Semrush + Microsoft Copilot
Give your AI Semrush SEO data: domain overview and history, organic and paid keywords, competitors, keyword gap, keyword volume, difficulty and ideas, URL rankings and backlinks, with the API unit cost of every report.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
SEMRUSH_API_KEY
Step 1 — Get credentials
- API access needs a Semrush SEO Business subscription plus an API units package, bought under Subscription info → API units (
https://www.semrush.com/accounts/subscription-info/api-units/). A new Business plan starts with zero units. - Open
https://www.semrush.com/accounts/api-keys/activeand copy an active v3 API key. - Paste it into
SEMRUSH_API_KEYand install the connector. The key is stored encrypted, added to each request by the connector and sent only to semrush.com. - Start with
semrush_get_api_units: it is free and shows how many API units the key has left.
Paid from your own Semrush API units: every report spends API units from your Semrush account, per line returned. It costs 10 units per line for the domain overview and its history, organic keywords, ranking pages, the keywords of a URL and the Google top 100 of a keyword (10 per keyword in a batch overview); 20 per line for paid keywords and broad-match ideas; 40 per line for organic competitors, related keywords, question keywords, backlinks and referring domains (40 per request for the backlinks overview); 50 per keyword for Keyword Difficulty; and 80 per line for Keyword Gap. Historical data with display_date costs five times as much. Reports return 10 lines unless you ask for more, and the AI raises that only when you need it. Fewer columns make a shorter answer but do not lower the price. When units run short, Semrush returns only the lines that were paid for.
Watch the all-country keyword report: semrush_keyword_overview_all_databases returns one line per country and cannot be limited: about 140 lines, up to 1,400 units. For one market, semrush_keyword_overview costs 10.
What it does: Domain Overview and its monthly history, in one country or in all of them; Organic and Advertising Research (the keywords a domain ranks for or buys Google Ads on); organic competitors and the pages that rank; Keyword Gap across up to five domains (shared, missing, unique and untapped keywords); volume, CPC, competition, intent, trend and Keyword Difficulty of one keyword or up to 100 at once; related, broad-match and question keywords; the Google top 100 Semrush recorded for a keyword; the keywords of a single URL; and Backlink Analytics with Authority Score, backlinks and referring domains. Every tool only reads.
Databases and filters: database is a two-letter country code (us, uk, de, it, fr, es and more). Mobile (mobile-us) and extended (us-ext) databases exist for domain reports only. Filters such as "volume above 1,000" or "positions 1 to 10" are sent in Semrush's own filter syntax, encoded by the connector.
Reading the answers: Semrush answers in semicolon-separated CSV with a header line and its column codes (Ph keyword, Po position, Nq search volume, Cp CPC in USD, Kd Keyword Difficulty, In intent and so on). The AI reads the codes for you.
Common errors: ERROR 50 :: NOTHING FOUND means Semrush has no data for this domain, keyword or database; check the spelling and the database rather than retrying. ERROR 120, 122 or 402: the API key is wrong; copy it again. ERROR 130 :: API DISABLED: the subscription has no API access. ERROR 132: no API units left (the backlinks reports also answer it for a key Semrush does not know). ERROR 133: the plan does not include this database. ERROR 429: too many requests at once; wait a moment.
The connector does not cover Projects, Position Tracking or Site Audit, the Trends (traffic) API, the Local and Listing Management APIs, or subdomain and subfolder reports.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in Microsoft Copilot
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
Microsoft Copilot uses MCP servers through agents built in Copilot Studio: you add AnythingMCP to an agent as a tool, then publish the agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud over Streamable HTTP, which AnythingMCP supports.
- In Copilot Studio, open your agent (or create one), go to Tools and choose Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol.
- Enter a Server name (for example
AnythingMCP), a Server description that says what the connector does, and the Server URLhttps://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID. Copilot Studio uses the description to decide when to call the server. - Under authentication, choose API key, set Type to Header and the header name to
X-API-Key, then select Create. - In Add tool, choose Create a new connection, paste an MCP API key from AnythingMCP (MCP Servers → your server → API keys) and select Add to agent.
- Try it in the agent's Test pane: ask for something that needs the
Semrushtools. - Select Publish, then Channels → Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, keep Make agent available in Microsoft Copilot selected and choose Add channel. See agent in Teams installs it for you; in Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @ and pick the agent.
Prefer per-user sign-in? Choose OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery instead of an API key: each user then signs in to AnythingMCP the first time the agent calls it.
Self-hosting? Use your instance's public HTTPS address instead of https://cloud.anythingmcp.com. Copilot Studio connects from Microsoft's cloud, so localhost does not work.

FAQ
Which Copilot is this for? Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, through agents built in Copilot Studio. The Microsoft Copilot app for personal accounts has no option to add your own MCP server.
What do I need? A work account with access to Copilot Studio (a license or a trial) to build the agent. People who use it in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams need access to the agent: share it with them, or ask an admin to publish it to the organization. If your organization applies data policies to Power Platform connectors, they cover MCP servers too.
The agent doesn't call the tools. Check that the header name is exactly X-API-Key and that the key belongs to the same MCP server as the URL, and make the server description specific: Copilot Studio uses it to decide when to call the server. Publish the agent again after each change; in an open chat, type "start over" to get the new version.
