ServiceNow + Meta Muse

Work in ServiceNow ITSM from your AI: find, open, update, resolve and close incidents, handle change requests and problems, follow service catalog requests and order items, search the knowledge base, look up users, groups and CMDB configuration items, and query any table.

Prerequisites

See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:

SERVICENOW_INSTANCE, SERVICENOW_USERNAME, SERVICENOW_PASSWORD

Step 1 — Get credentials

A ServiceNow admin sets this up once, in about 10 minutes. A free personal developer instance from https://developer.servicenow.com works for trying it out.

  1. Create an integration user: User Administration → Users → New. Give it a user ID and a strong password, tick Web service access only (the user cannot sign in to the UI), and leave Password needs reset unticked, or the first call fails.
  2. Give the user the roles the work needs:
    • itil reads and writes incidents, problems, change requests, requests, requested items and catalog tasks, and reads the CMDB.
    • snc_platform_rest_api_access, only if your instance limits REST access to that role (REST API access policies).
    • Knowledge articles are readable as the knowledge base's user criteria allow; the knowledge role is needed only to write articles.
    • For a read-only connector, add snc_read_only next to itil: the instance then refuses every write. Do not use admin.
  3. Set SERVICENOW_INSTANCE to the instance name only (dev123456 for https://dev123456.service-now.com), and SERVICENOW_USERNAME and SERVICENOW_PASSWORD to the integration user. Install the connector: it signs in with Basic auth, and the install check lists one incident.

ACLs still apply: the user sees and changes what your instance's ACLs allow. Records it may not read are left out of lists rather than refused, so an unexpectedly empty list usually points to an ACL or, with domain separation, to the user's domain.

OAuth instead of a password: on the instance, open System OAuth → Application Registry → New → Create an OAuth API endpoint for external clients, set the redirect URL to https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback (self-hosted: <your AnythingMCP URL>/api/mcp-oauth/callback) and save. In AnythingMCP, open the connector, switch Authentication to OAuth 2.0, enter the client ID and secret, the authorization URL https://<instance>.service-now.com/oauth_auth.do and the token URL https://<instance>.service-now.com/oauth_token.do, save and click Authorize with Provider. Whoever signs in becomes the ServiceNow user for everyone who uses the connector, with that user's roles. Refresh tokens last 100 days by default; authorize again when they run out. Accounts with multi-factor sign-in need OAuth, because Basic auth cannot answer the second factor.

What it covers: incidents (open, update, add work notes or customer comments, resolve, close), change requests, problems, service catalog requests and requested items with the answers of their order forms, ordering catalog items, knowledge search, users, groups and their members, CMDB configuration items with their relationships, attachments, and any other table the user may read, with counts grouped by any field.

Confirm first: every tool that writes says so, and the AI shows you what will change and waits for your yes. Customer comments are usually e-mailed to the caller. Writes run your business rules, workflows, SLAs and notifications exactly like a change in the UI, under the integration user's name. servicenow_delete_record is switched off at install.

Filters: list tools take ServiceNow encoded queries, such as active=true^priority=1^assignment_group.name=Service Desk. The easiest way to get one is from the UI: filter a list, right-click the breadcrumb and choose Copy query. Lists return 20 records by default and up to 1,000 per call.

Common errors: 401 means a wrong user name or password, a locked or inactive user, or an expired OAuth authorization. 403 Failed API level ACL Validation or Insufficient rights: the user lacks the role or ACL, or a REST access policy blocks the call. 404 No Record found: the record does not exist in that table, or the ACLs hide it. A personal developer instance that has gone to sleep answers with a wake-up page: open it once at developer.servicenow.com.

Custom domains: an instance served under its own host name needs its base URL changed in the connector settings to https://<host>/api.

Step 2 — Install the adapter

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d

Step 3 — Add the connector in Muse

Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide shows YOUR_SERVER_ID.

Muse adds remote MCP servers as custom connectors and signs in to them with OAuth.

  1. In Muse, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Paste the MCP server URL https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID.
  3. Muse opens the AnythingMCP sign-in page: sign in and approve access.
  4. In a chat, ask Muse for something that needs the ServiceNow tools.

You can also set it up from a chat, on the web, in the iOS and Android apps or in WhatsApp. Send Muse this message:

Create a Custom Connector for a new remote MCP server, then connect to it:
Name: AnythingMCP
Transport: remote streamable HTTP
URL: https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID
Auth: OAuth

Self-hosting? Use your instance's public HTTPS address instead of https://cloud.anythingmcp.com. Muse connects from Meta's cloud, so localhost does not work.
