signNow + ChatGPT
signNow e-signatures for one account: browse folders, documents and templates, check invite status and document history, download signed PDFs, create documents from templates or files, prefill fields, send role-based, free form and document group invites, remind and cancel.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
SIGNNOW_API_KEY
Step 1 — Get credentials
Setting up takes about 3 minutes. You need a signNow account with API access; a free developer account (https://www.signnow.com/developers) works for testing.
- Sign in to signNow and open the API Dashboard (
https://app.signnow.com/webapp/api-dashboard). - Open Apps and Keys, select your application (or create one) and copy the key from the API Keys tab.
- Paste it into
SIGNNOW_API_KEY, withoutBearerand without spaces. The connector sends it asAuthorization: Bearer <key>. The key does not expire; deleting it in the dashboard revokes the connector's access. - Install the connector and run
signnow_get_user: it shows the account the key belongs to and confirms the key.
Why an API key: signNow also offers the password grant (only for the owner of the API app) and the OAuth 2.0 authorization code flow (for acting on behalf of other signNow users). For automating one account signNow recommends the API key, and it is the simplest option here: no token renewal, no stored password. The connector acts as the signNow user who owns the key.
What it reads:
- Account and folders:
signnow_get_user,signnow_list_folders(root, Documents, Templates, Archive, Trash Bin and your own folders, with document counts) andsignnow_get_folder, which lists the documents, templates and document groups in one folder. It filters by signing status (signed, pending, waiting-for-me, waiting-for-others, unsent, expired) or date;entity_typetemplate lists templates. - Documents:
signnow_get_document(roles, fields, field invites with their status, free form requests),signnow_get_document_fields(the filled-in values),signnow_get_document_history(every event with time, email, IP address and client app),signnow_list_free_form_invitesandsignnow_get_routing_details(the signer roles of a template in signing order). - Files:
signnow_download_document(one flattened PDF or a ZIP, optionally with the history appended),signnow_get_download_link(a temporary public link, no sign-in needed) andsignnow_download_document_group(one merged PDF or a ZIP). - Document groups:
signnow_list_document_groups,signnow_get_document_group,signnow_get_document_group_recipients,signnow_get_group_invite(status of each step),signnow_list_template_groupsandsignnow_get_template_group.
What it writes:
- From a template:
signnow_create_document_from_template, optionallysignnow_prefill_text_fieldsby field name, thensignnow_send_invitewith onetoentry per role (role names such as "Signer 1" come fromsignnow_get_document), orsignnow_create_signing_linkfor a direct signing link without email. - From a new file:
signnow_upload_document_from_url(withcheck_fieldstrue, text tags in the file become fields; withmake_templatetrue it is stored as a template), fields added withsignnow_update_documentif needed, thensignnow_send_invite. A file without fields goes out withsignnow_send_free_form_invite: one signer per call, who places the signature anywhere.signnow_create_templateturns a document into a template. - Follow-up:
signnow_resend_field_invite(a reminder to one pending signer),signnow_cancel_invite,signnow_cancel_free_form_invite,signnow_move_documentandsignnow_create_folder. - Document groups:
signnow_create_document_group,signnow_create_group_from_template,signnow_send_group_invite(signing in steps, each with the emails to notify and the sign or view actions),signnow_resend_group_inviteandsignnow_cancel_group_invite.
Invites, reminders and group invites email real people, and signed documents are legally binding. The AI shows you the document, the signers with their roles and the message, and sends only after your clear yes. from must be the email of the signNow account the key belongs to. signnow_update_document with fields replaces every field of the document, so the AI includes the fields to keep. A cancelled invite cannot be restored.
Switched off at install: signnow_delete_document (pending invites of the document stop working) and signnow_delete_document_group (the documents themselves are kept; a group with a pending invite must be cancelled first). They cannot be undone, so a workspace admin turns them on when the team needs them.
Data formats: ids are 40-character hex strings. created and updated are Unix timestamps in seconds, often sent as strings. A document is a template when template is true. Field invite status: created (waiting for an earlier signer), pending (out for signing), fulfilled (signed) and declined; free form invites: pending, fulfilled, cancelled. Field coordinates are pixels from the top left of the page, and pages start at 0.
Paging: signnow_get_folder takes limit (up to 100) and offset and returns total_documents. Document groups and template groups take limit (up to 50) and offset; free form invites take page and per_page (up to 100).
Common errors: a wrong, deleted or missing API key answers 400 with invalid_token and code 1537; signNow does not use 401 here. 403 means the key's user may not see or do this. 404 Unable to find a route means an unknown or malformed id. 400 with an errors list means invalid input, for example an unknown role, a from that is not your account email, or a role-based invite on a document without fields. On 429 the AI waits and retries. Accounts on the signNow EU server or older evaluation accounts (api-eval.signnow.com) use another API host: change the connector's base URL to it.
The connector does not sign documents itself, does not upload files from your computer (only from a public URL) and does not use OAuth or the password grant.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in ChatGPT
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
ChatGPT adds MCP servers as plugins on its Plugins page, on the web and on paid plans. Developer mode is no longer needed. In a Business workspace only admins and owners can add one; in Enterprise and Edu an admin can grant the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, click +, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name, e.g. Name:
signNow. - Under Connection, enter the Server URL
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_IDand keep Authentication on OAuth. - Select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. When ChatGPT asks, sign in to AnythingMCP and allow access.
- Install the new plugin from your personal plugins, then type @ in a chat and pick it.
