Spotify + Claude
Let your AI work with your Spotify account: search music and podcasts, read your playlists, Liked Songs, top artists and recently played tracks, see what is playing, create playlists and add or remove tracks, and control playback on Premium after your confirmation. Signed in through a Spotify developer app of your own.
Prerequisites
See the full setup instructions baked into the connector (visible in the in-app store when you select the connector). The required environment variables for this connector are:
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID, SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET
Step 1 — Get credentials
- Sign in at developer.spotify.com/dashboard with the Spotify Premium account that will own the app, and click Create app.
- Enter a name and a description. Under Redirect URIs add
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback. If you host AnythingMCP yourself, usehttps://your-anythingmcp-host/api/mcp-oauth/callback. Tick Web API, accept the terms and click Save. - Open the app's Settings: copy the Client ID into
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID, click View client secret and copy the secret intoSPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET. - Under User Management add every Spotify account that will sign in, with a name and the email address of that Spotify account. Up to 5 accounts.
- Install the connector, click Authorize with Provider on the connector page, sign in to Spotify and accept.
- Check the setup with
spotify_get_me: it shows the account you signed in with.
A personal connector, by Spotify's rules: Spotify runs every new developer app in development mode. Since February 2026 the owner of the app needs an active Spotify Premium subscription, or the app stops working until Premium is renewed. An app serves at most 5 Spotify users, each added by hand under User Management; anyone else can sign in, but every call is refused with 403. More users need Spotify's extended quota, which only registered businesses with a launched service and at least 250,000 monthly active users can apply for. In practice the connector is for your own account and a few people you add.
Redirect URI rules: Spotify accepts only HTTPS redirect URIs, or http://127.0.0.1 with a port for a local test. localhost is refused. The URI in the app must match the one AnythingMCP uses exactly.
What it reads: your profile; catalog search for tracks, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, episodes and audiobooks; details of a track, album or artist and an artist's releases; your playlists and the tracks of playlists you own or collaborate on; Liked Songs; your top artists and tracks over 4 weeks, 6 months or about a year; recently played tracks; what is playing now, your devices and the queue.
Asks before every change: spotify_create_playlist, spotify_add_playlist_items and spotify_remove_playlist_items change your playlists, and spotify_start_playback, spotify_pause_playback, spotify_skip_to_next, spotify_skip_to_previous and spotify_add_to_queue change what is playing. Before each one the AI tells you what will happen and waits for your yes. New playlists are public unless you ask for a private one.
Playback needs Premium: controlling playback needs Spotify Premium on the signed-in account and the Spotify app open on a phone, computer or speaker. Without an active device Spotify answers NO_ACTIVE_DEVICE: open Spotify somewhere, or let the AI pick a device from spotify_list_devices. A free account gets PREMIUM_REQUIRED. Seeing what is playing works on free accounts too. The connector remote-controls your Spotify apps; it does not play audio itself.
Switched off at install: spotify_save_to_library and spotify_remove_from_library (save or remove Liked Songs, follow or unfollow). To use them, add the scopes user-library-modify and user-follow-modify in the connector's OAuth settings, authorize again and switch the tools on. They ask first too.
What development mode leaves out: recommendations, audio features, related artists, an artist's top tracks, new releases, featured and category playlists, and other users' profiles and playlists. Spotify's own editorial and algorithmic playlists cannot be opened. Search returns at most 10 results per type and call, and popularity, followers and genres are no longer returned.
Common errors: 401: the sign-in expired or was revoked; click Authorize with Provider again. 403: the account is not in User Management, the owner's Premium has lapsed, or the playlist is neither yours nor shared with you as a collaborator. 429: development-mode quotas are counted per developer account; wait and try again later.
The connector does not download or preview audio, change playlist covers, or use the endpoints Spotify reserves for extended quota.
Step 2 — Install the adapter
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/HelpCode-ai/anythingmcp/main/docker-compose.quickstart.yml -o docker-compose.yml
printf 'JWT_SECRET=%s\nENCRYPTION_KEY=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
docker compose up -d
Step 3 — Add the connector in Claude
Your server URL: in AnythingMCP, open MCP Servers → the server this connector is on, and copy its URL (
https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/…). Use it wherever this guide showsYOUR_SERVER_ID.
Recommended path: works on claude.ai web without editing any config file.
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors.
- Click +, then Add custom connector.
- Enter a name, e.g.
Spotify, and the remote MCP server URLhttps://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID, then click Add. - Click Connect and sign in to AnythingMCP (OAuth) to allow access.
