Setting up Asana
From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.
Asana organises work as workspaces, projects, sections and tasks. This adapter reads them and can create tasks, update them and post comments as the token's user.
Getting credentials
- In Asana, click your profile photo, then Settings, Apps, View developer console (older menus say Manage developer apps), or open https://app.asana.com/0/my-apps.
- Under Personal access tokens choose Create new token, give it a name, accept the terms and copy the token into
ASANA_ACCESS_TOKEN. It is shown only once and acts with your permissions.
Workflow: start with asana_get_me (it also lists your workspaces) or asana_list_workspaces. Pass a workspace gid to asana_list_projects, then a project gid to asana_list_tasks or asana_list_sections. For your own work, call asana_list_tasks with assignee = me plus workspace. asana_get_task returns notes, custom fields and memberships; asana_list_task_stories returns comments and activity.
Formats and gotchas: every id is a string gid, e.g. 1204567890123456. Dates are YYYY-MM-DD, times ISO 8601 UTC. Each read tool sends opt_fields with a compact default field list; pass your own comma-separated list (nested fields with dots, e.g. assignee.name) to get other fields. completed_since=now returns only incomplete tasks. asana_search_tasks needs a premium workspace or team; other users get HTTP 402, so fall back to asana_list_tasks. Search results lag writes by up to a minute.
Writes: asana_create_task, asana_update_task and asana_add_comment change real data visible to the team. Show the user what will be written and wait for confirmation; never retry a successful create.
Pagination and rate limits: list tools send limit (default 50, max 100). While more results exist the body holds next_page.offset: call again with offset set to it until next_page is null. Search has no next_page: sort by created_at and narrow with created_after. Asana allows 150 requests per minute on free domains, 1500 on paid ones, and 60 per minute for search; on HTTP 429 wait for the Retry-After seconds.
Cloud reachability: app.asana.com is a public HTTPS API, so AnythingMCP Cloud and self-hosted installs reach it without extra network setup.
