Guides for UK

Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.

Setting up UK Companies House

From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.

This connector uses the UK Companies House Public Data API v1.

Getting an API key: register a free account at https://developer.company-information.service.gov.uk → 'Manage applications' → 'Create an application' (pick Live or Test) → 'Create new key' → REST. Copy the generated key into COMPANIES_HOUSE_API_KEY. The key is a 36-character ID with dashes (like 1a2b3c4d-5e6f-...), shown under the application's Keys list — not the application name, and not the account password.

Authentication quirk: Companies House uses HTTP Basic Auth where the API key is the username and the password is empty (the canonical curl shape is -u API_KEY:). This adapter mirrors that — leave the password configuration empty.

Reading auth errors: 400 Invalid Authorization header means the value in COMPANIES_HOUSE_API_KEY is not shaped like a key at all (spaces, quotes, an application name) — re-copy the key itself. 401 Invalid Authorization means it is shaped right but Companies House does not recognise it (mistyped, or its application was deleted).

Company numbers: always 8 characters, zero-padded (e.g. 00006400 not 6400). The search endpoint returns matches with the canonical number you can feed into the other tools.

Rate limit: 600 requests per 5-minute window per API key. Returns HTTP 429 with Retry-After when exceeded.

Free: no paid tier required for the Public Data API. Streaming/companies-bulk products require separate registration.
