Setting up DHL Shipment Tracking
From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.
Tracks DHL shipments through DHL's Shipment Tracking - Unified API (api-eu.dhl.com/track/shipments), which covers DHL Express, Parcel Germany (DHL Paket), eCommerce, Freight and other DHL services with one key. Every tool is read-only.
Getting credentials
- Create an account at developer.dhl.com, then on the Shipment Tracking - Unified API page click Get Access (or My Apps → Create App) and add that API to an app.
- DHL reviews the request. After approval, the app in My Apps shows an API Key (Consumer Key). Put it in
DHL_API_KEY; it is sent in theDHL-API-Keyheader. The API Secret is not needed for tracking.
Limits: a new key may make 250 calls per day and at most 1 call every 5 seconds. Higher quotas are requested from DHL in the app's dashboard. Do not poll the same shipment over and over in one conversation.
One tracking number per call: DHL documents that the Unified API accepts only one tracking number per request and does not support batch tracking. A comma-separated list in dhl_track_multiple_shipments is therefore not resolved as a batch. Track each number with dhl_track_shipment instead, at least 5 seconds apart.
Reading the response: shipments[] can hold more than one match when a number exists in several DHL services; service on each entry says which (express, parcel-de, ecommerce, freight …). status.statusCode is one of pre-transit, transit, delivered, failure or unknown; status.status and status.description carry the readable text, and events[] holds the history, newest first. estimatedTimeOfDelivery appears only when the service provides it. Timestamps are ISO 8601; one without a time zone is local time at the event's location. language (e.g. de) is a preference only: the text comes back in that language when the service offers it.
Not found: HTTP 404 means DHL found no shipment for the number. Check the number for typos; a label that was only just created may not be trackable until DHL has scanned or registered the shipment. HTTP 401 means the key is missing, wrong or not yet approved.
Cloud reachability: api-eu.dhl.com is publicly reachable over HTTPS.
