Guides for ESPN

Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.

Setting up ESPN

From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.

ESPN

This connector reads ESPN's public site API (https://site.api.espn.com), the same feed that powers the scoreboards on espn.com: scores and schedules, game details, news, teams, rosters, standings and injury reports. No API key is needed and every tool only reads.

Unofficial, no SLA. ESPN does not document this API or promise anything about it. Fields, league slugs and limits can change without notice, there is no published rate limit, and ESPN can block heavy use. Keep calls few, do not poll every few seconds, and do not use it as the data feed of a commercial product: for that, license data from ESPN or a sports data provider. Content belongs to ESPN.

Sport and league. Every tool takes sport and league:

  • football: nfl, college-football
  • basketball: nba, wnba, mens-college-basketball, womens-college-basketball
  • baseball: mlb
  • hockey: nhl
  • soccer: eng.1 (Premier League), esp.1 (LaLiga), ger.1 (Bundesliga), ita.1 (Serie A), fra.1 (Ligue 1), usa.1 (MLS), uefa.champions, uefa.europa, fifa.world An unknown slug answers 400.

Typical flow.

  1. espn_get_scoreboard for a day's games (dates YYYYMMDD; YYYYMM for a month). Each game has an event id.
  2. espn_get_game_summary with that id for the box score, leaders, scoring plays, lineups and injuries.
  3. espn_list_teams for team ids and abbreviations, then espn_get_team, espn_get_team_roster or espn_get_team_schedule.
  4. espn_get_standings for the table, espn_get_news for headlines, espn_get_injuries for a league's injury report.

Reading the data. Times are ISO 8601 in UTC (2026-10-19T00:15Z): convert before quoting a kickoff. Scores are strings. The betting lines are what ESPN displays (usually one sportsbook); for real odds comparison use a betting odds connector. Standings columns differ by sport (soccer has points and goal difference, US leagues win percentage and games behind).
