Guides for FreshBooks

Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.

Setting up FreshBooks

From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.

This connector wraps the FreshBooks New API (api.freshbooks.com/accounting). You authorize it once, in AnythingMCP; access tokens are then renewed automatically.

Setup:

  1. Go to https://my.freshbooks.com/#/developer → Create an App. Add the redirect URI https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback on AnythingMCP Cloud, or <your AnythingMCP server URL>/api/mcp-oauth/callback when you host AnythingMCP yourself, and select the scopes listed below.
  2. Enter the app's Client ID as FRESHBOOKS_CLIENT_ID and its Client Secret as FRESHBOOKS_CLIENT_SECRET, set FRESHBOOKS_ACCOUNT_ID (step 4), leave FRESHBOOKS_REFRESH_TOKEN empty, and install.
  3. Open the connector and click Authorize with Provider. Sign in to FreshBooks, allow access, and you land back on the connector page with the tools ready.
  4. Account ID: the FreshBooks API requires an Account ID (bzz...) on most endpoints. If you do not know it, install with any placeholder, authorize, run freshbooks_me (the accountid of your business) and set the real value in FRESHBOOKS_ACCOUNT_ID.

Scopes: user:profile:read user:clients:read user:clients:write user:invoices:read user:invoices:write user:expenses:read user:payments:read user:payments:write, which covers every tool here. The app must have the same scopes selected.

Already have a refresh token? You can paste it into FRESHBOOKS_REFRESH_TOKEN instead of step 3, if you obtained it yourself for the same app. FreshBooks refresh tokens work only once and only the newest one is valid, so a token you already exchanged, for example while testing it, is spent and the connector fails with invalid_grant. Authorizing from the connector page avoids this.

Authentication: OAuth2 with the engine's refresh handling. Access token sent as Bearer. Account ID goes in the URL path on most endpoints — substituted via runtime envVar.

Two-account-types: classic 'accounting' (US) and 'projects' (international, the new product). This adapter covers the accounting endpoints.

Response shape: FreshBooks wraps everything in {response: {result: {<entity_plural>: [...]}}}. The adapter does not unwrap automatically — handle in the caller.

Pagination: page (1-based) + per_page (max 100). Cursor on some newer endpoints.

Rate limits: 30 req/min per token, 3600/hr. 429 → exponential.

Out of scope here: reports, journal entries, project tracking (separate /projects API).
