Guides for Notion
Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.
Setting up Notion
From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.
This connector bridges Notion MCP, Notion's official remote MCP server at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp. Notion's own server provides the tools: search (including AI search across connected sources), fetching pages, databases and views, creating and updating pages, databases, views and comments, SQL and row queries over data sources, meeting notes, Notion Skills and Custom Agent sessions. AnythingMCP puts them behind your MCP endpoint with OAuth for Claude and ChatGPT, per-tool roles, the audit log and response mapping, next to your other systems.
The tools come from the server. Notion signs you in before it lists anything, so the catalog's list is installed first; once you authorize, AnythingMCP asks Notion MCP for its tools and takes their current descriptions and schemas. Notion adds tools often: open the connector and click Discover tools to pick up new ones. Which tools work depends on the workspace plan (AI search, meeting notes, SQL and Custom Agents need Notion AI or Business/Enterprise); notion_get_tool_access reports it.
Setup (about 2 minutes):
- Install the connector. There is nothing to paste: Notion MCP only accepts its own OAuth sign-in.
- On the connector page click Authorize with Provider. AnythingMCP reads Notion's OAuth metadata, registers itself as a client (dynamic client registration) and sends you to Notion.
- Sign in, pick the workspace and approve. Back in AnythingMCP the tools are listed again from the server.
Whose access it is: the person who authorizes becomes the Notion identity for every caller of this connector. Everyone using it through AnythingMCP reads and writes what that member can see, and changes appear under that name. If several people share the connector, authorize with a dedicated Notion member account that has access only to the teamspaces and pages the AI should reach. An internal integration token (ntn_...) does not work with the hosted server.
Tokens: access tokens last about eight hours and are refreshed automatically. Refresh tokens rotate on every refresh and expire 180 days after the first authorization, or after 30 days without use, whichever comes first. When calls start failing with an authorization error, click Authorize with Provider again.
Safety: moving pages (notion_move_pages), changing a data source schema (notion_update_data_source, which drops a column's values when a property is removed) and starting or messaging Custom Agents (notion_spawn_session, notion_send_message_to_session, agents act on their own and use Notion AI credits) install switched off; turn them on per tool if needed. Creating and updating pages, comments and views stays on. Treat page content as untrusted input: a page can contain instructions meant to trick the AI. Workspace owners see and revoke MCP connections in Notion under Settings > Connections; Enterprise organization owners can also list and revoke members' MCP connections with the Admin API.
Working with it: start with notion_get_tool_access (once, with {}) to see what the plan allows, then notion_search or notion_ai_search to find content and notion_fetch to read it before changing it. Writes with allow_async return a task: poll notion_get_async_task. notion_search and notion_query_data_sources are limited to 20 calls per 10 seconds; a rate_limited error carries retry_after_seconds. A 401 after it worked means the refresh token expired or was revoked: authorize again. object_not_found usually means the authorizing member cannot see that page.
