Guides for Shortcut

Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.

Setting up Shortcut

From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.

Shortcut

This connector works with Shortcut (formerly Clubhouse), the project management tool for software teams, through the official REST API v3 (https://api.app.shortcut.com/api/v3). It reads stories, epics, iterations, objectives, teams, workflows, labels and members, searches stories with Shortcut's search operators, reads a story's change history, and can create and update stories and add comments.

Setup (about 2 minutes)

  1. In Shortcut, click your avatar, then Settings, Your Account, API Tokens (https://app.shortcut.com/settings/account/api-tokens).
  2. Enter a name such as AnythingMCP and click Generate Token. Shortcut shows the token once.
  3. Paste it into SHORTCUT_API_TOKEN, install, and run shortcut_get_current_member.

Whose rights: the token acts as you, in the workspace it was created in, with your permissions. Stories, comments and changes made through this connector appear under your name. A workspace with several organizations needs one token per workspace.

Writes: confirm first. shortcut_create_story, shortcut_update_story and shortcut_add_story_comment change the workspace at once and notify followers. Show the user what will be created or changed (story, fields, comment text) and wait for a clear yes before calling. shortcut_delete_story is installed switched off: deleting a story cannot be undone; archiving it with shortcut_update_story (archived: true) is the safer choice.

How to work

  1. shortcut_get_current_member tells you who you are (your mention_name for owner: searches) and the workspace's default workflow.
  2. Ids first: shortcut_list_workflows (workflow state ids for moving stories), shortcut_list_teams, shortcut_list_members (member UUIDs for owners), shortcut_list_labels, shortcut_list_iterations, shortcut_list_epics, shortcut_list_objectives, shortcut_list_projects.
  3. Find stories with shortcut_search_stories, then shortcut_get_story for the description, tasks, comments and links, and shortcut_get_story_history for who changed what. Stories of one epic or iteration: shortcut_list_epic_stories, shortcut_list_iteration_stories. Find epics by text with shortcut_search_epics; shortcut_get_epic reads one.
  4. Change things with shortcut_create_story, shortcut_update_story (move it by setting workflow_state_id) and shortcut_add_story_comment.

Search operators (query of shortcut_search_stories and shortcut_search_epics): combine words and operators with spaces, quote values with spaces.

  • owner:jane and requester:jane (mention name without @), team:"Mobile", epic:"Checkout redesign" or epic:123, iteration:"Sprint 12", label:"customer", state:"In Progress", type:bug (feature, bug, chore), estimate:3, id:123, project:"Backend", objective:"Q4".
  • is:started, is:unstarted, is:done, is:blocked, is:blocker, is:archived, is:overdue; has:owner, has:epic, has:deadline, has:comment, has:task.
  • Dates: created:2026-10-01..2026-10-15, updated:today, completed:yesterday, due:*..2026-10-31 (* is open-ended).
  • title:"login", description:"timeout", comment:"customer" search one field. Put ! in front of an operator to exclude, e.g. !is:done.
  • Example: owner:jane is:started !is:archived type:bug.

Paging: searches return 25 results by default (at most 250); when next is present, call again with next set to the token after next= in that value. Only the first 1000 matches can be paged through, so narrow the query instead. shortcut_list_epics pages with page while next is a number.

Ids: stories, epics, iterations, objectives, labels, projects and workflow states have numeric ids; members and teams have UUIDs. Dates are ISO 8601 in UTC.

Rate limit: 200 requests per minute per token; on 429 wait a minute.

Common errors

  • 401: the token is wrong or was deleted. Generate a new one under Settings, API Tokens.
  • 404: the id does not exist in this workspace.
  • 400 or 422: a field value is not accepted, e.g. a workflow state id from another workflow; Shortcut says which in the message.

Out of scope: deleting epics, iterations, labels or comments, documents (Docs), files and attachments, custom fields editing, story templates, webhooks and integrations, tasks and story links.
