Coinbase

This connector reads public market data from Coinbase, the crypto exchange: the trading pairs Coinbase lists, live prices and recent trades, the order book, price history as candles, and spot prices in any currency, today or on a past day. It calls the public market endpoints of the Coinbase Advanced Trade API (https://api.coinbase.com/api/v3/brokerage/market) and the Coinbase Data API spot price (https://api.coinbase.com/v2/prices). No account, API key or sign-in is needed, and nothing to set up.

Read-only by design: this connector cannot trade or move funds. It has no tool that places, edits or cancels an order, buys, sells or converts crypto, or sends, withdraws, deposits or transfers crypto or money, and none can be switched on: it never signs in to a Coinbase account. It also cannot see anyone's balances, wallets, portfolios, orders or transactions. When the user asks for any of that, say so plainly and point them to the Coinbase app or website. Coinbase's account APIs need either a key that signs every single request, which this connector does not do, or a Coinbase OAuth app, which Coinbase only grants to approved partners.

Not financial advice. Prices, volumes and order books are informational. Do not tell the user to buy, sell or hold anything; present the numbers, their time, and where they came from, and mention that crypto prices move fast and can fall sharply.

Valuing a portfolio: the user can tell you what they hold (for example 0.5 BTC and 3 ETH). Multiply each amount by coinbase_get_spot_price in their currency (BTC-EUR, ETH-EUR) and add up. For a value on a past day, pass date as YYYY-MM-DD. State the time of the prices you used.

Pairs: Coinbase names a pair BASE-QUOTE in capitals, e.g. BTC-USD, ETH-EUR, SOL-USDC. Not every pair exists (there may be BTC-EUR but no SOL-CHF); coinbase_list_products with product_ids checks several at once, and a pair that does not exist answers 404 "not supported". Some pairs are aliases of another (BTC-USDC trades in the BTC-USD book): see alias_to. coinbase_get_spot_price also takes fiat pairs such as USD-EUR.

Which tool

  • Current price and 24 hour change of one or more pairs: coinbase_list_products with product_ids, or coinbase_get_product.
  • Live best bid and ask, and the latest trades: coinbase_get_market_trades.
  • Depth and spread: coinbase_get_product_book (10 levels per side by default).
  • History and charts: coinbase_get_candles with a granularity from ONE_MINUTE to ONE_DAY.
  • A price in another currency or on a past day: coinbase_get_spot_price.
  • The current time on Coinbase: coinbase_get_server_time.

Numbers and times: prices and sizes come as strings to keep every digit; sizes and volume_24h are in the base currency, prices and approximate_quote_24h_volume in the quote currency. Candle start and the start and end parameters are Unix seconds; get the current value from coinbase_get_server_time (epochSeconds) and subtract (3600 for an hour, 86400 for a day) (seconds since 1 January 1970, UTC); trade times are ISO 8601 in UTC. Convert to the user's time zone before quoting a time. One candle request covers fewer than 350 candles: for a long history pick a larger granularity (ONE_DAY covers almost a year) rather than many calls.

Limits: the public endpoints are rate limited per IP address; on 429 wait a few seconds before the next call. Coinbase caches market data for about a second.

Errors

  • 404: the pair does not exist or is not supported.
  • 400 INVALID_ARGUMENT: a parameter is wrong, for example a window with 350 or more candles; Coinbase says which in message.

Out of scope here: anything that needs a Coinbase account (balances, portfolios, orders, fills, fees, transactions, deposits, withdrawals, transfers and conversions), trading of any kind, WebSocket streams, and derivatives positions.
