Guides for Dialpad

Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.

Setting up Dialpad

From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.

Dialpad

This connector works with one Dialpad company through the Dialpad API v2 (https://dialpad.com/api/v2) with an API key sent as a Bearer token. It reads users, offices, call centers, departments, numbers, calls with recordings and Dialpad Ai transcripts, contacts and statistics, and it can start calls, send text messages, create contacts and share recordings.

Setup (about 3 minutes, Dialpad company admin needed)

  1. Sign in to Dialpad as a company admin and open Admin Settings.
  2. Under My Company, open Authentication, then API Keys, and click Add key. Name it, choose when it expires and tick the additional scope calls:list (needed by dialpad_list_calls); add recordings_export too if recording URLs stay empty. Save and copy the key; it is shown only once.
  3. Paste it into DIALPAD_API_KEY and install. Check the setup with dialpad_list_offices and dialpad_get_company.

A company admin key reaches every user, call and contact of the company: share this MCP server only with people allowed to see them. Some tools (dialpad_get_company, dialpad_list_numbers, dialpad_list_calls) answer 403 to keys of non-admins. The Dialpad sandbox (sandbox.dialpad.com) is not supported here.

Personal data. Calls, phone numbers, contacts, call recordings, voicemails, transcripts and statistics exports are personal data of callers and staff. Read only what the user asks for, and do not create public recording links without a clear reason.

Calls and texts reach real people and can cost money: confirm first. dialpad_initiate_call rings the user's devices and then dials the number; dialpad_send_sms texts up to 10 numbers. International and premium destinations are billed on top of the plan. Before calling them, show the user sender, recipient and content and wait for a yes. dialpad_create_contact and dialpad_create_recording_share_link also need a yes first.

How to work

  1. Organisation: dialpad_get_company, dialpad_list_offices, dialpad_get_office, dialpad_list_users, dialpad_get_user, dialpad_list_departments, dialpad_get_department, dialpad_list_call_centers, dialpad_get_call_center, dialpad_get_call_center_status, dialpad_list_numbers.
  2. Calls: dialpad_list_calls lists ended calls (filter by started_after and started_before in Unix milliseconds and by one target), dialpad_get_call gives recording details, share links and the transcription text. Durations are in milliseconds.
  3. Dialpad Ai transcripts: dialpad_get_call_transcript for the lines and Ai moments, dialpad_get_call_transcript_url for a link to the call review page. Calls without Dialpad Ai have no transcript (404).
  4. Recordings: the URLs in recording_details need a Dialpad login; dialpad_create_recording_share_link makes a share link with a chosen privacy, dialpad_get_recording_share_link reads it again.
  5. Calling and texting: dialpad_initiate_call, dialpad_send_sms.
  6. Contacts: dialpad_list_contacts, dialpad_get_contact, dialpad_create_contact.
  7. Statistics: dialpad_start_stats_export starts an export and returns request_id; poll dialpad_get_stats_export every few seconds until status is complete, then give the user the download_url (a CSV file).

Paging: lists answer with items and a cursor; pass the cursor back for the next page. The last page has no cursor. Pages hold up to 100 items.

Rate limits (per company): most reads 1200 per minute, dialpad_get_call only 10 per minute, dialpad_initiate_call 5 per minute, dialpad_send_sms 100 per minute (800 on higher tiers), creating contacts 100 per minute, statistics exports 200 per hour. A 429 means wait and try again.

Common errors

  • 401: the API key is wrong, deleted or pasted with a Bearer prefix.
  • 403: the key belongs to a non-admin, lacks access to this office or resource, or lacks the scope (calls:list for the call list).
  • 404: no such id, or no transcript for that call.
  • 400 on a text: a number is not in E.164 format or the sender may not use from_number.

Out of scope here: hanging up or transferring live calls, changing users, offices, numbers and routing, webhooks and event subscriptions, meetings and faxes. Dialpad Ai call summaries (recaps) are only delivered through call event webhooks, not through this API.
