Guides for Linear
Step-by-step setup for the most popular AI clients.
Setting up Linear
From the connector definition itself: where to find the credentials, what they need to be allowed to do, and which API this adapter talks to.
This connector bridges Linear's official remote MCP server (https://mcp.linear.app/mcp), run by Linear. Linear's own server provides the tools: issues, projects, initiatives, milestones, cycles, documents, comments, labels, templates, status updates, releases, notifications and Linear diffs (code review). AnythingMCP puts them behind your MCP endpoint with OAuth for Claude and ChatGPT, per-tool roles, the audit log and response mapping, next to your other systems. Every tool gets the prefix linear_, so Linear's list_issues becomes linear_list_issues and never collides with another connector's tool of the same name.
The tools come from the server. At install AnythingMCP asks Linear's server which tools it has, so you get the set Linear serves today. Linear adds tools regularly: open the connector and click Discover tools to pick up new ones.
Setup (about 2 minutes):
- In Linear, open Settings > Account > Security & access and, under Personal API keys, create a new key. Name it after its use, for example "AnythingMCP".
- Choose the key's permissions and team access. A key limited to read access gives a read-only connector; add write access (or only issue and comment creation) if the AI should change things.
- Copy the key (Linear shows it once; it starts with
lin_api_), paste it intoLINEAR_API_KEYand install. It is stored encrypted and sent asAuthorization: Bearer, which Linear's server accepts in place of its interactive sign-in.
Safety: the API key acts as the Linear user who created it. Everything the AI creates or changes appears in Linear under that person's name, and it reaches exactly what that person and the key's permissions reach. For a connector shared by a team, create the key from a dedicated Linear member with access to the right teams only. Switched off at install: the deletions (delete_attachment, delete_comment, delete_diff_comment, delete_status_update), merge_diff (merges a pull request or adds it to the merge queue), the retire_*_label tools (they change labels for the whole workspace) and share_issue / unshare_issue (they change who can see an issue). Turn one on per tool if the AI really needs it. For a strictly read-only connector, change the base URL in the connector editor to https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly, which only ever exposes read tools, and click Discover tools.
Working with it: start with linear_list_teams, linear_list_issues (assignee "me" for your own issues) or linear_get_issue with an identifier such as ENG-123. Call linear_list_issue_statuses and linear_list_issue_labels before linear_save_issue, so status and label names match the team's. linear_search_documentation answers questions about Linear itself. A 401 at install means the key is wrong, expired or revoked; a 403 or a permission error on one tool means the key's permissions or team access do not cover it. Linear needs no IP allow list: the AnythingMCP server only has to reach mcp.linear.app over HTTPS.
