Cursor MCP: add MCP servers to Cursor

Cursor has built-in MCP support. You can install servers from the Cursor Marketplace with one click, or add any server by URL in an mcp.json file. Below are the current steps from Cursor's documentation.

How to add an MCP server to Cursor

One click from Customize

  1. Open Customize in the sidebar and click MCPs.
  2. Search for the server and click Add to Cursor.
  3. If the server uses OAuth, follow the sign-in prompts.

Any remote MCP server via mcp.json

  1. Create ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all your projects, or .cursor/mcp.json inside a project to share it with your team through git. Both files are merged; if they define the same server, the project file wins.
  2. Add the server under mcpServers with its url. For an API key, add it under headers; for OAuth servers Cursor runs the sign-in itself.
  3. Save the file and restart Cursor. The server appears under Customize → MCPs, where you can switch it on or off.
  4. In the Agent chat, Cursor uses MCP tools when they are relevant and, by default, asks for your approval before running one.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "anythingmcp": {
      "url": "https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/mcp/YOUR_SERVER_ID",
      "headers": {
        "X-API-Key": "${env:ANYTHINGMCP_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

${env:NAME} keeps keys out of files you commit. On Enterprise plans, admins can restrict which MCP servers and tools users may run.

What AnythingMCP adds

Cursor's MCP support usually connects developer tools. AnythingMCP brings your company's systems into the same chat: REST/OpenAPI, SOAP and GraphQL APIs and SQL databases become MCP tools without code, behind one URL you add to mcp.json once. Per-user MCP API keys, role-based tool access and an audit log come with it. Run it on AnythingMCP Cloud (hosted in Frankfurt, 7-day free trial) or self-host it; it is open source under AGPL-3.0.

Cursor MCP: frequently asked questions

Does Cursor support MCP?

Yes. Cursor supports the stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP transports, and MCP tools, prompts, resources, roots, elicitation and MCP Apps.

Where is Cursor's mcp.json?

~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home folder for servers available in every project, and .cursor/mcp.json inside a project for project servers. Both are merged; for the same server name, the project file wins.

How do I pass an API key to a remote MCP server in Cursor?

Add a headers object next to url, for example an X-API-Key header with your AnythingMCP key. Cursor resolves ${env:NAME} in url and headers, so the key can stay in an environment variable.

Remote or local MCP server: which one should I use in Cursor?

Local servers run as a process on your machine (command, args, env) and serve only you. Remote servers are reached by URL, can authenticate with OAuth or headers, and one server can serve a whole team.
