Spotify

This connector works with one Spotify account through the Spotify Web API (https://api.spotify.com/v1), as the user who signs in: the profile, catalog search, tracks, albums, artists, the user's playlists and their items, Liked Songs, top artists and tracks, recently played, what is playing now, devices and the queue. It can create playlists, add and remove playlist items and control playback. It signs in with OAuth 2.0 (authorization code with PKCE) through a Spotify app of your own.

Spotify's limits for new developer apps (read this first)

• A new app runs in development mode. Since February 2026 the app owner needs an active Spotify Premium subscription, or the app stops working until it is renewed.
• At most 5 Spotify users per app, each added by name and Spotify email under User Management. Anyone else can sign in, but every call answers 403.
• Extended quota (more users, all endpoints) is only granted to organizations: a registered business with a launched service, at least 250,000 monthly active users and availability in key Spotify markets. Individuals cannot apply. So in practice this connector is for your own account and a few people you add.
• Not available to development-mode apps, so no tool offers them: recommendations, audio features and audio analysis, related artists, featured and category playlists, new releases, browse categories, an artist's top tracks, other users' profiles and playlists, the markets list and the "several items at once" endpoints. Spotify's own editorial and algorithmic playlists cannot be opened, and the items of a playlist are only readable when the user owns it or collaborates on it.
• Search returns at most 10 results per type per call (default 5); page with offset. Popularity, followers, genres, record label, available markets and the user's email, country and subscription level are no longer returned.

Setup (about 10 minutes)

1. Sign in at https://developer.spotify.com/dashboard with the Premium account that will own the app and click Create app.
2. Enter a name and description. Under Redirect URIs add https://cloud.anythingmcp.com/api/mcp-oauth/callback on AnythingMCP Cloud, or <your AnythingMCP URL>/api/mcp-oauth/callback when you host AnythingMCP yourself. Spotify accepts only HTTPS redirect URIs, or http://127.0.0.1:<port>/... for a local test; localhost is refused. Tick Web API, accept the terms and Save.
3. Open the app's Settings: copy the Client ID into SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID, click View client secret and copy it into SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET.
4. Under User Management add every Spotify account that will sign in (name and the email of the Spotify account), up to 5.
5. Install the connector, click Authorize with Provider, sign in to Spotify and accept.

Scopes requested: user-read-private, playlist-read-private, playlist-read-collaborative, playlist-modify-public, playlist-modify-private, user-library-read, user-follow-read, user-top-read, user-read-recently-played, user-read-playback-state, user-read-currently-playing, user-modify-playback-state. spotify_save_to_library and spotify_remove_from_library are installed switched off; to use them add user-library-modify and user-follow-modify to the scopes in the connector's OAuth settings and authorize again.

Confirm before every change. spotify_create_playlist, spotify_add_playlist_items, spotify_remove_playlist_items, spotify_start_playback, spotify_pause_playback, spotify_skip_to_next, spotify_skip_to_previous and spotify_add_to_queue change the user's account or what is playing: say what will happen and wait for the user's yes.

Playback control needs Premium on the signed-in account and an open Spotify app on some device. Without an active device Spotify answers 404 NO_ACTIVE_DEVICE: open Spotify on a device, or pass a device_id from spotify_list_devices. A free account gets 403 PREMIUM_REQUIRED. Reading what plays (spotify_get_playback_state, spotify_get_currently_playing, spotify_get_queue) works on free accounts; an empty answer means nothing is playing.

Ids and URIs: ids are 22 characters (e.g. 4iV5W9uYEdYUVa79Axb7Rh); URIs add the type (spotify:track:4iV5W9uYEdYUVa79Axb7Rh). A shared link https://open.spotify.com/track/<id> carries the id. Playlist and library write tools take URIs, read tools take ids.

Paging: list tools return total and next; call again with a higher offset while next is set. spotify_get_recently_played pages with before = cursors.before.

Sign-in lifetime: access tokens last one hour and are renewed automatically with the refresh token. After changing scopes, click Authorize with Provider again.

Errors

• 401 "The access token expired" or "Invalid access token": click Authorize with Provider again.
• 403 with a user who is not in User Management, or when the app owner's Premium lapsed: add the user, or renew Premium.
• 403 on a playlist's items: the user neither owns nor collaborates on it.
• 403 PREMIUM_REQUIRED, 404 NO_ACTIVE_DEVICE: see playback above.
• 429 QUOTA_EXCEEDED or Too many requests: development-mode quotas are counted per developer account; wait and try again later.

Out of scope: playing audio itself (the API only controls Spotify apps), downloading or previewing audio, podcasts and audiobook chapters beyond search, playlist cover images, and every endpoint Spotify reserves for extended quota.
