SAP Joule with Claude or a direct MCP connection: which fits your SAP?
SAP Joule brings Claude into SAP's own applications. A direct MCP connection brings your SAP data into Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot. What each does, and when to use which.
TL;DR: SAP and Anthropic have announced Claude inside SAP's Business AI platform, where it powers Joule and its agents. That is SAP's route: Claude working inside SAP's applications, delivered and licensed by SAP. A direct MCP connection with AnythingMCP is the other direction: your SAP data inside Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot, on systems you run yourself, today. They answer different needs and can run side by side.
What each one is
SAP Joule is SAP's own assistant, built into SAP's cloud applications. With Claude on the SAP Business AI platform, Joule agents can reason and act across SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba and other systems. SAP runs it, SAP decides which products, editions and releases get which capabilities, and it is licensed through SAP.
AnythingMCP is an open-source MCP gateway (AGPL-3.0) that you run next to SAP. It gives Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Cursor tools for your SAP system: for S/4HANA it reads the HANA database with SAP's own data dictionary as tools, or calls the Gateway's OData services; for S/4HANA Cloud, Business One and Concur it calls their APIs.
- Roles and tool access
- Read-only by default

When Joule fits
- Your users live in SAP's applications and the assistant should be there.
- You run S/4HANA Cloud or SAP's other cloud products and want SAP to operate and support the AI layer.
- SAP's agents cover the processes you care about, and your SAP contract includes the Business AI capabilities.
When a direct connection fits
- Your people already work in Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot and want SAP data there, next to email, documents and other systems.
- You run S/4HANA on-premise or on Private Cloud and want to start now, on your own infrastructure, with a read-only technical user.
- You need SAP and non-SAP systems in the same conversation: SAP next to DATEV, a CRM or a production database.
- You want to see and control exactly which tools the model has and what SQL it runs.
Using both
They do not exclude each other. Joule inside SAP for users who work there; a direct MCP connection for analysts and managers who ask their questions in Claude or ChatGPT. The direct route reads through its own technical user, so it needs no change to SAP's Joule setup.
FAQ
Is AnythingMCP an alternative to SAP Joule? For some needs. If you want SAP data inside Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot, yes. If you want an assistant inside SAP's applications, run by SAP, that is Joule's job.
Does the direct connection need SAP BTP? No. The HANA SQL route talks to the database directly, and the OData route to SAP Gateway. S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition uses a BTP communication arrangement, because that is how SAP exposes its APIs there.
Can Claude change data in SAP through the direct connection? Not in S/4HANA: its connectors only read. SAP Business One can create sales orders and Concur can act on expense reports, where you allow those tools.
Where do I start? Connect SAP to Claude shows every SAP route; Connect SAP S/4HANA via HANA is the step-by-step for on-premise and Private Cloud.
