ChatGPT MCP: connect MCP servers to ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to MCP servers as plugins. There is no separate developer mode any more: you add a custom MCP server on the Plugins page, and in Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin decides who may do that. Below are the current steps from OpenAI's documentation.
How to add an MCP server to ChatGPT
Add a custom MCP server
- On chatgpt.com, open Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins), click the + button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name and, optionally, a description. Under Connection, paste the MCP server URL including the
/mcppath as Server URL. - Choose the Authentication: OAuth, No authentication or OAuth or no authentication. For a server with sign-in, such as AnythingMCP, keep OAuth.
- Review the risk warning, select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. If the server uses OAuth, sign in when asked.
- Open the new plugin under your personal plugins and install it. In a new chat, type @ and pick it.
This works in ChatGPT on the web; OpenAI does not list the Free plan. OpenAI's help center still calls full MCP support with write actions a beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and says Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions. ChatGPT asks before write actions according to your app permissions.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu
- A workspace admin or owner allows it with the Create plugins with MCPs permission under Workspace settings → Permissions & roles (this used to be the Developer mode setting). On Business only admins and owners can create custom MCP servers; on Enterprise and Edu admins can grant the permission to selected roles.
- The admin, or a member with the permission, adds the server from Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server as above.
- New plugins start private. Sharing them and publishing them to the workspace directory are separate permissions (Share plugins, Publish plugins to workspace).
- Under Workspace apps (chatgpt.com/admin/ca) admins choose which actions the app may run and when ChatGPT asks first, and refresh its tool list after the server changes.
Once an admin has approved a custom MCP app, ChatGPT works from a snapshot of its tools: changes on the server apply only after an admin refreshes the tool list. On Enterprise and Edu, admins can also decide per role who may use each app.

What AnythingMCP adds
ChatGPT needs a remote MCP server with an HTTPS URL. AnythingMCP is that server for your own systems: it turns REST/OpenAPI, SOAP and GraphQL APIs and SQL databases into MCP tools without code, handles OAuth 2.0 for ChatGPT and logs every call. One endpoint serves all your connected systems, so you create one app in ChatGPT instead of one per system. AnythingMCP provides the MCP backend, meaning the tools, auth and data layer; if you also want custom UI inside ChatGPT, you build it on top with OpenAI's Apps SDK.
ChatGPT MCP: frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT support MCP?
Yes. ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers that you add as plugins; OpenAI's older pages call them connectors or custom apps. According to OpenAI's developer documentation it supports the SSE and streaming HTTP transports, with OAuth, no authentication, or both.
Which ChatGPT plans can add a custom MCP server?
OpenAI says all eligible users can add custom MCP servers in ChatGPT on the web, and it does not list the Free plan. Full MCP support including write actions is in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu; the help center says Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions. In Business workspaces only admins and owners can add one; in Enterprise and Edu an admin grants the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
Do I still need developer mode?
No. OpenAI removed the separate developer mode toggle at the start of October 2026. You add custom MCP servers from the Plugins page, and in workspaces the former Developer mode permission is now called Create plugins with MCPs.
Can ChatGPT connect to a local MCP server?
Not directly. ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers, so the server needs a public HTTPS URL. For a server on a private network or your own machine, OpenAI offers Secure MCP Tunnel.
What is the difference between a ChatGPT app, a connector and a plugin?
An app connects ChatGPT to an external service; a custom MCP server you add becomes one. OpenAI's older pages call apps connectors. A plugin packages one or more apps and skills into a workflow, and a custom MCP server is created as a plugin. Apps with their own interactive UI are built with OpenAI's Apps SDK.
